Shikamana School for Orphans and Disadvantaged Children

Please do not come to the school empty handed.  There are many things that the school are extremely grateful to receive.  Some of which can be bought locally in Diani or Ukunda, some are best brought from home.

Below is a list of things that you may like to consider taking to the school.

Clothing. From aged 3yrs up to 14yrs, including underwear, and even shoes.
Toothbrushes (2 for 10p in tesco)
Toothpaste (17p for a large tube in tesco)
Soap (13p for 3 bars in sainsbury)

Pencils, biros, sharpeners, rulers, protractors, set squares, compass.
Exercise books, (these can be bought locally I saw some in the Chandarana Supermarket, and I beleive there is a bookshop in Ukunda that sells them for a very good price, or tesco often have packs of 5 for £1)

Cuddly toys (the younger children will appreciate these)
Yoyos, small kites, bottles of bubbles, packs of balloons.
Skipping ropes. Footballs, Volleyballs. (school has a pump so the balls can be taken uninflated).
Story books. Comics.

Laptops, with personal data removed, and with appropriate power cables.

Packets of custard & jelly.  These are cheap to buy in most supermarkets and provide the children with a nice sweet treat after their nutritious school lunch, it is easily prepared by Simon the School Chef, as only adding boiling water is required.

Please dont be tempted to bring sweets.  You would have to bring SO many for every child to have one, and the dental health of most Kenyan's is very poor, so they can do without this well intentioned treat.  Buy packs of balloons instead, they can each have one to play with, or share in small groups if there are not enough to go round, they are light to pack too!!  A pump to blow them up might be useful too!!!

If you think of anything else you think would be useful do take it, and also let me know so that I can add things to this list. (julie.voice@btinternet.com.
